Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition
Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition
Boston (June 8th, 2009) PRAISED BY THE BOSTON GLOBE AS STARTLING AND ORIGINAL, THE FOURTH ANNUAL BOSTON YOUNG CONTEMPORARIES EXHIBITION OPENS June 26th at the 808 Gallery.
The show features some of the best emerging artists in New England. With over 70 artists representing 11 Master of Fine Arts and Post-Baccalaureate programs, this year's wide-ranging show includes a variety of contemporary painting, photography, prints, video and sculpture. Boston Young Contemporaries is an organization established in 2006 by three Boston University graduate students aimed to highlight the exciting contemporary art scene in Boston. The show provides a meeting point for many artists, curators and gallery owners from the Boston area and beyond.
Each year, the show inspires collaborations and leads to participation in other exhibitions in various galleries and museums throughout New England.
This year's panel included three distinguished jurors:
Ken Tyler, master printmaker and major figure in the explosion of American printmaking that has taken place over the past 30 years.
Kayla Mohammadi, Boston-based artist and recipient of the 2008 Joan Mitchell Foundation Award.
George Kinghorn, director of the University of Maine Museum of Art, and former executive director of the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art (JMOCA).
The 89 works in the show were rigorously selected to illustrate the broad spectrum of what is contemporary now. Two of the jurors will be distributing prizes of cash and art materials at the opening reception.

Nineteen emerging artists from universities and colleges around the country will have their work showcased in an exhibit that opens Friday in the UNH Museum at the Dimond Library.
Close Associations: UNH MFA Invitational brings together Master of Fine Arts degree candidates from UNH and other schools for a month-long show featuring 44 pieces of art. A preview reception, free and open to the public, will be held Friday, April 24, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Each participating UNH graduate student invited one or two artists they had met as undergraduates or with whom they found connections in their work.
The main idea was to highlight trends in conceptual and formal development in the painting world, says Erin Murray, exhibit curator, and UNH MFA candidate.
Murray got the idea for the show after being asked as an undergraduate to exhibit her work at American University in an invitational show called A Friend Indeed.
Close Associations features seven UNH candidates working towards their MFAs in painting, including Suzie Dittenber, Christopher Dolan, Graham Loper, Dustin OHara, Gregory Poulin, Alan Rushing and Murray.
In addition, the exhibition hosts work from artists Chris Carter, University of Washington; Jessica George, Maine; Bree Johnson, Chicago Art Institute; Brian Kelley, Indiana University; Brendan Loper, American University; Aaron Lubrick, Kentucky; Will Reed, New York Studio School; Megan Rogers, University of Pennsylvania; Suzy Shireson, Indiana University; Carly Slone, Wright State University; Lana Stephens, American University; and Aron Wehr of Indiana University.
Some of the artists submitted one work while others entered up to seven pieces. In many cases, artists who sent smaller pieces submitted more than one.
The exhibit will be at the museum until May 23. It will be open to the public on May 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in conjunction with the MFA Thesis Exhibition IIs preview reception at the Museum of Art, Paul Creative Arts Center. Close Associations is funded in part by the Graduate Painting Program at UNH.
